Interactive Petrophysics (Intpetro.exe). IP is a program that can be used by many disciplines including petrophysicists, geologists and reservoir engineers. The program allows you to maximize the potential from well data by offering control and flexibility through a user-friendly and intuitive interface. Ervoir intervals using Senergy Interactive Petrophysics (IP.v, 3.6) software. Well logs which record different physical bore-hole parameters against depth were interpreted and subjected to various petrophysical analyses and also employed to carry out litho-stratigraphic correlation across the wells. • This week, I would like to explain about environmental corrections on gamma ray (GR) and density (RHOB) curves.

    IP has a lot of built-in tools like curve editing, merging, depth shifting, histogram and cross-plotting for quality controlling the log curves, I will not explain detailed on these things that it will depend on individual log curve availability and needs. But you can always looks ways and answers in IP help file which is quite comprehensive and well informative on IP software. Below is how to open the help file;

    After clicking the help topics, it should come up the help file;

    In the contents of the help file, the information like PC requirements to detailed explanation of equation and methodology behind petrophysical interpretations (you need to know which parameter and calculations are using behind IP’s interpretation) are included.

    Ok, now you know how to open the help file. Please remember, help file is the most useful program for IP interpretation process (I normally got nearly 90% of my answers from IP help file). It includes graphical detailed explanation and is a very handy tool. I let you to read the rest of the help file by yourself.

    Let’s go to interpretation process.

    Before you do any interpretation, you need to have print out copy of your log to make sure you can get all the information you need within your fingertip. Normally, when Schlumberger (in my country, SLB is the only logging service company so I cannot make comparison to other logging service company, sorry 🙂 ) gave the client the data, it should include three folders namely DLIS_Files, PDS_files & LAS_files.

    We only need LAS file for our interpretation and PDS file to view the logging information like mud weight, mud filtrate resistivity, mud type and so on. Generally, LAS file should include all the necessary information for petrophysical interpretation but information like logging tool sketch and input logging parameters cannot be included in the LAS file which you may need during interpretation process. And for my case, I always prefer to look at the data in print out copy instead of looking back and forth to LAS file. So you need either print out copy of your log or PDS file to get these information. In order to see the PDS file, you need to have PDS viewer in your machine.You can download the latest PDS viewer from here.

    Last week, we already load the LAS file into the new database and QC the loading process. I hope you save the file in your database, so you don’t need to reload it again :). Ok, after loading the well into your new database, you need to do environmental correction for your GR, RHOB and NPHI curves. It was under calculation tab. I am assuming our test well-1 was logged by schlumberger and will do corrections on “schlumberger corrections”.

    You can see that several logging companies are included in the list and you can choose depending on your logging service company. After clicking the “schlumberger corrections”, the fist tab pop-up is for GR correction;

    “SGR” curve in red box is your un-corrected gamma ray curves where caliper in your blue box is your caliper log for borehole diameter data. The output curve after correction is “GrC” curve. You need to check in your log print out that is borehole corrected or not, tool is center or eccentered and mud type is barite or non barite. Whether hole type is open hole or cased hole. Put final mud weight data before logging and standoff data. If your GR log was logged in cased hole, you need to put all the cased hole information in it. After putting all the information, you need to click “Run Tab” for making correction.

    The next correction is for “Density” log correction.

    In this tab, RHOB is your un-corrected density log and RHOC is corrected output for density log. In this well, no PEF (photo electric factor) log was present, so black in PEF log. If you have PEF curve, you need to select PEF curve in input data to produced corrected “PEFC” curve. Mud weight data should be automatically added if you corrected GR log previously. Then choose density tool type, whether “FDC” or “LDT”.

    OK, this is the end of part III. It may be short as I am quite busy with other work. I hope, next week I can explain more about environmental corrections on Neutron porosity log and clay volume calculation.

    Crack

    Cheers!
